Gov’t discontinues JUTC bus lane on Mandela Highway
A section of the Mandela Highway KINGSTON, Jamaica — Minister of State in the Ministry of Economic Growth and Job Creation Everald Warmington yesterday announced that the exclusive bus lane for JUTC buses along Mandela Highway into the Corporate Area will be discontinued with immediate effect.
To accommodate the bus lane, the westbound dual carriageway is converted to two-way traffic from Caymanas Bay to Plantation Heights between 6:00 am and 8:00 am on weekdays. The bus lane was introduced on November 1, 2013. “We have done our own reviews and deem that it is causing much inconvenience to road users without much success. Going forward, the road will be used according to how it was designed,” Warmington said during his Sectoral Presentation. The announcement was a “heartwarming” one for the Transport Operators Development Sustainable Services (TODSS), who said in a release yesterday that it “is most pleased and elated”. However, the group lamented that the move came just three weeks after it lost the case to discontinue the bus lane in the Supreme Court. It further questioned the sincerity of the announcement.
