News post February 8, 2016

ST JAMES, Jamaica – The police have this morning confirmed the shooting death of two people and the injury of three others at Sunday’s Jamaica Labour Party’s (JLP) mass rally in Sam Sharpe Square, Montego Bay in St James. One of the deceased has been identified as 22-year-old Javin Campbell otherwise called ‘Javinci’, who the police say is known as a member of a gang that operates in the Flanker community of St James. The other deceased person has not yet been identified.

According to initial reports from the St James Police, the shooting incident occurred about 10:20 pm during the rally following a dispute among attendants at the mass rally. Five people were shot during the incident with three being treated in hospital.

The police say that the shooting was contained within the area where the dispute occurred and no shots were fired in the direction of the podium where the opposition leader was speaking at the time of the incident.

The police say they have launched an investigation in the matter and will provide further details.
