News post July 1, 2016

KINGSTON, Jamaica (JIS) – The National Clean-up Programme will move to communities in South West St Andrew tomorrow. Minister of Local Government and Community Development, Hon. Desmond McKenzie, will lead citizens and partner agencies in the five-day clean-up exercise, which will get under way in Majesty Gardens. Focus will be placed on removing bulky waste such as old cars, tyres, refrigerators and other appliances, and clearing open lots. Special attention will be placed on unregulated garages. Persons will meet at the Majesty Gardens playfield at 9:30 am tomorrow before moving into the various communities.

South West St Andrew is the fourth leg of the national campaign, aimed at encouraging residents to clean up their personal space so as to eliminate breeding sites of mosquitoes, particularly in light of the Zika virus and other vector-borne diseases. The programme is being driven by a National Task Force established by Prime Minister Andrew Holness and spearheaded by the Ministry of Local Government and Community Development. Clean-up activities have been undertaken in St James, Portland, and West Central St Andrew Partners in the clean-up programme are the National Works Agency (NWA), Office of Disaster Preparedness and Emergency Management (OPDEM), Jamaica Fire Brigade, Jamaica Emergency Employment Programme (JEEP), National Solid Waste Management Authority (NSWMA), and the Ministry of Health.
