Fire of unknown origin early Sunday morning destroyed five houses on Barry Street between Rum Lane and Wildman Street in downtown Kingston.
According to residents, the fire started about 1:00 am and the fire service was called.
The Jamaica Fire Brigade’s divisional head for Kingston and St Andrew, Superintendent Kevin Haughton, said firefighters were alerted approximately 1:33 am and remained at the scene until about 9 o’clock.
Units from Half-Way-Tree, Rollington Town, Trench Town and Spanish Town responded and extinguished the blaze. About 100 people, including children, are now homeless. Loss is estimated at $30 million.
